"Humans: Nature's remedy for an otherwise good time." -Rhage when the Caldwell police interrupt a fight with lessers[1]

While humans are largely unaware of the supernatural in The Black Dagger Brotherhood universe created by JR Ward, there are some exceptions.

Creation[]

In keeping with the Christian themes in the series, humans were created by the Creator before any other races came into being.

Characters[]

The following is a compilation of major or recurring human characters who have had encounters with the supernatural or otherwise been drawn into their world.

Butch[]

  • Although Butch is now a vampire, he wasn't one when he got pulled into the Brotherhood's world. At first, he felt like a pampered pet, now he's a Brother.

DelVecchio Sr, Thomas[]

diPietro, Vincent[]

  • As a teenager, Vin willingly made a deal with Devina, not knowing her true nature, and his desires came true in ways he couldn't anticipate. When she came into his life later as his fiancee, it wasn't too to convince him to work with Jim Heron on an exorcism to purge him of her influence.

Heron, Jim[]

  • Being made an angel and put in charge of a contest between heaven and hell to determine the fate of all creation is a helluva way to find out there is a Creator and a devil.

Jane[]

  • Jane's introduction to the Brotherhood was not voluntary, but when given the option to remain with Vishous, she snatched it up.

Manny[]

  • Jane went to Manny for help in treating Payne and despite his feelings for her, he was spooked by the significant differences between them, especially her abilities that come from her mother. It's those same abilities that extend his lifespan, allowing them to have more than a mere mortal's lifetime together.

Marie-Terese[]

  • Finding out that your lover's possessed by his ex, the devil, is one way to confirm one's beliefs. And you thought your ex was bad.

Mary[]

Stroughton, Claire[]

Veck[]

Watkins MD, Sarah[]

Relations with the Other Races[]

Lessers[]

Due to their nature, lessers need to recruit humans to bolster their numbers. There's an unspoken agreement between the Lessening Society and the Black Dagger Brotherhood to avoid drawing human attention to the war since the lessers don't want interference as they hunt down vampires.

Shadows[]

When it comes to any race, Shadows prefer to keep to themselves. The more spiritual of them see interaction with humans as a contamination of the body and spirit.

Sympaths[]

Although sympaths prefer to stay in their colony, they like to use their abilities to mess with the minds and emotions of humans when they have the opportunity.

Vampires[]

The vampires need to keep their existence a secret in order to protect themselves from being targeted out of fear or for scientific experiments. This is easier due to the fact that vampires tend to look down on humans as "rats without tails." There are laws against exposure such as feeding the blood of a vampire to a human.[2] When it comes to the Brotherhood, humans must prove themselves trustworthy otherwise they're seen as little more than potential lessers.
