"The woman who stuck her head into the backseat was handsome, with short blond hair and dark green eyes. "Hi, I'm Doc Jane. I'd like to take a look at you, if you'll let me."
Her voice was level. Kind. Calm."
-Sola upon meeting Jane[1]
Jane is a human ghost mated to the Brother Vishous and runs a medical clinic for the Black Dagger Brotherhood in the series of the same name by JR Ward.
Biography[]
It is apparent that Jane suffered from a cold and strict upbringing where her parents even controlled what foods she was allowed to put salt on. When she was 15, her dad told her that it was a good thing she was smart because with her looks she wouldn't marry particularly well.[2]
While playing with a Ouija board the night of her thirteenth birthday, it tells her the man she'll marry is named "Vishous." That same night, she sees the ghost of her sister, Hannah, and doesn't know that she had died at the age of ten. In the morning, Jane learns that Hannah had died of congenital heart failure.[3]
At the funeral, instead of crying, she threw up the oatmeal she was forced to eat every morning and a church lady drove her home where she spent the rest of the day alone. Her mother grew even more distant and cold while her father threw himself into his work, both of them carrying on as if nothing had happened. Both of her parents died in a plane crash on their way to a medical conference in 1997.[2]
Devastated by Hannah's sudden death, Jane was driven to go into medicine and found her calling in the Trauma Department. She passed the New York Medical Boards, which qualified her to work for St. Francis Hospital where she worked under Dr. Manuel Manello, the Chief of Surgery, as Chief of the Trauma Department. Early in their working relationship, Manny had been attracted to her, although she didn't return the feeling.
After an altercation, Vishous is brought into St. Francis in critical condition and Jane was the attending physician. The unique physiology of vampires fascinated her. She died in 2007.
Since her spirit remains on Earth and can interact with others, even taking on a solid corporeal form when she concentrates and wills it, she will not age. Since the Scribe Virgin faded away, Jane will not pass into the Fade.
The current emergency doctor for the Black Dagger Brotherhood, Jane extended the PT room into a clinic with a set of 3 hubs that serve as both treatment bays and surgical suites.[4]
Personality[]
An extremely skilled trauma surgeon, Jane is pretty unflappable and, after what happened to her sister, she firmly believes in empathy for all of her patients. She's very thorough, going over every patient death in case there was anything that could have been done differently, and she remembers each and every death. The list of the dead she keeps in her head is what drives her.[5] Despite her personal motivations and skills, she's not arrogant and sees herself as part of a team.[6] Sarcastic and no-nonsense, she won't put up with aggressive posturing and has no problem ordering Brothers around if they're interfering with a patient of hers, even when she was still human.
Physical Description[]
Tall and slim, Jane has short blonde hair and dark green eyes behind rimless glasses. Not so much beautiful as compelling, she has a square jaw and almost masculine features[7], she describes herself as about as feminine and curvy as an operating table. Her speech patterns are direct, authoritative, and commanding.[6] If she's distracted and someone not paying attention walks into her, her clothes decompress.
Vishous made her a gold chain necklace out of their names in the Old Language, using the letters as links and her name in the middle of his so she's surrounded by him. She never takes it off.[8] She wears a gunmetal grey wedding ring.[9]

Since they're are so alike, Jane and Vishous can be a formidable team, but they can also butt heads a lot. They continue to have a colourful sex life; she calls him "puppy."[8] When he touches her with his left hand she becomes fully corporeal. They're child-free by both choice and biology.
