A former reporter, Jo Early is a half-breed vampire who shares the same father as Manny and Butch, which makes her distantly related to Wrath. Jo's mated to the Bastard Syn in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by JR Ward; together they are the main characters of the eighteenth book, The Sinner.
Biography[]
Born in Boston to a nurse, her mother died from pregnancy-related complications after giving birth to Jo. She was adopted by a wealthy human couple, Chance and Phillie Early, who treated her more like a checkbox on a list of things they needed to do to keep up appearances rather than a beloved daughter.
Jo attended Williams College in Williamstown, MA where she studied English Literature with a minor in American History. She was accepted into Yale University's master's program for English, but could not afford the bill and therefore had to decline.[1]
She works as a secretary for a real estate agent in Caldwell, NY.
She takes a job as an online editor at the Caldwell Courier Journal. There, she works closely with Bill Elliot. She begins her website about vampires during this time. As she continues her investigation into the vampire world, she finds out she's a half-breed. She meets her lover, Syn, and finds her family, Dr. Manny and Butch.
Personality[]
Jo is tenacious, continuously turning back to following vampires for her blog, no matter how many times Vishous wipes her memories and takes down her blog that discusses vampires and attempting to 'out' them to the world as real. She's stupidly courageous as a journalist, putting herself at risk for an interview.[2] She is quick to judge, prevalent in her relationship with Syn.
Physical Description[]
She was 26 years old in The Beast.[1] She smells like a meadow.[3] She has red hair and green eyes.

Dougie Keefer[]
Before transitioning, Jo found herself in dire need of a place to stay and met Dougie, aka Reefer, through an acquaintance. He let her couchsurf until a bedroom in the apartment opened up and she became a sort of den mother to a bunch of stoner man-boys. On April Fool's Day 2007, he borrowed her car then sent her a photoshopped picture of the Volkswagen wrapped around a tree; the prospect of the cost of repairs sent her into a breakdown.[4] His insistence on involving her in finding evidence of the incident at the Brownswick School for Girls was what got her on the Brotherhood's radar in the first place.
Manny Manello[]
Brother. Butch, Jo, and Manny all share the same father, Robert Bluff, which makes them all distantly related to Wrath. Jo and Manny have the same Mother. Manny's mother who is a nurse. She put Manny up for adoption and fifteen years later she died during the birth of Jo.
Syn[]
hellren. Jo and Syn first meet in an alley and Syn helps her run from the police. Not the best first impression, Jo regards him as condescending and sexist, but is misconstrued since Syn can tell she's about to go through her transition. Jo tends to feel safe with Syn as they continue to interact and can't deny the bond they have. Syn was actually hired to kill Jo, but realized it was his female and killed the man who hired him instead to protect her. He goes with her as she attempts to regain her memories that were taken from her by Vishous while she hunts vampires. They are attacked by lessers and Syn protects her, but Jo is absolutely terrified of Syn. She finds out a lot of information in a short time, Syn being a vampire, her being a half-breed and about to transition, and that Syn was hired to kill her. It results in a big fight between them and Jo wants nothing to do with Syn. She later finds out that he killed the man who put the hit on her to save her and forgives Syn. Jo ends up saving Syn from a hit that was placed on him and resolve all their issues to be together.
