Mae is looking for the Book, a book of dark magic. She wants to save her brother, Rhoger from his death. Rhoger did in front of Mae, she put his body in the bathtub and keeps his body in ice to preserve his body. Mae meets Sahvage at an underground fight by Rehv. She thinks he has the book. Rehv doesn’t have the book, but he knows what it is, he tells her he doesn’t have it and she should stay away from it. She doesn’t believe him. Rehv goes to Wrath and tells him about the women, which brings the Brotherhood into all of this because Rehv tells them this is dark magic that no one should mess with it.

Devina had the Book, she took it from Throe in Blood Truth. But apparently the Book has a mind of its own and can go where it wants, or is summoned. Balthazar ran across the Book while stealing from a couple who lives at the Commodore. Balz is attracted to the book, but a voice tells him to leave it, and he listens by leaving the penthouses. Mae and Tallah summon the book, but it doesn’t come. Instead they get one of Devina's Shadows, she sent it after their summoning. Sahvage saves them from the shadow while trying to make nice with Mae. Mae isn’t having any of it, she has other things on her mind, like resurrecting her brother. Devina wants to get her hands on Mae because she’s the one who summoned the Book.

Devina kidnaps Mae and takes her to her paranormal loft, locking her in a dog cage. Mae breaks out of the dog cage while Devina watches. Devina attacks Mae when Mae tells her she doesn't have the book and doesn't know where it is. Meanwhile Sahvage is panicking and looking for Mae, he knows something is wrong, he can't sense her blood anywhere. Devina then leaves her connection to Balthazar leads her to the penthouse at the Commodore, because he realizes that book is the one they are all looking for. But Devina can't actually pick the book up, so she asks Balz to hand it to her. He somehow understands she can't get it herself and he tells her no.

While Mae is locked in Divina's loft, and Devina is with Balz in the penthouse. Rehv calls Sahvage and tells him he has one chance to meet with him and it's now. Sahvage reluctantly agrees and temporarily abandons his search for Mae. When Sahvage meets Rehv, Rehv bails out and Tohr comes out of the woods to speak to Sahvage, somehow they all put the pieces together and figured out Rehv's fighter is Sahvage. Some of the other brothers show up, Sahvage recognizing V and a couple others, he also notices some missing and some that are new. Sahvage and Tohr confronts Sahvage about his disappearing act 200 years ago, he comments that Sahvage isn't the one who killed Zxysis the Elder, Sahvage admits he did not, but doesn't give away who did. Sahvage loses his patience and tells them he has to go because Mae has been taken by a demon. Butch speaks up and asks if she has long dark hair and is very pretty, Sahvage says yes, Butch says he knows where to find her and agrees to take him there. Sahvage, Butch and Tohr go to find Mae.

Mae is desperate to get out of the loft because she thinks Devina is going to just kill her when she gets back. While she's trying to figure out what to do the 3 brothers show up and see nothing in the paranormal loft. Butch says it is the same thing he and V saw when they came last time, but Sahvage says he can feel her in there, he knows she's here. Mae also feels him and starts yelling for him, she decides to do a summoning spell like she did with the book and see if she can bring him to her. In the end it works and they are together again. The 3 brothers take her to see Manny to be assessed, but Mae is terrified and wants to go home where she is safe. Manny says they will go there and he will treat her. Manny and Tohr leave. Mae tells Sahvage she wants to be with him because she thinks life is short and she thought he was going to die. She doesn't want to die without knowing what it's like to have sex with him. He decides to show her some things, but doesn't want to take her virginity in her desperate state. After they are done, he tells her is leaving to get ice for Rhoger, but he is meeting Balthazar so they can get the book.

After meeting Balz, he and Sahvage go to the penthouse to get the book. They don't realize the security system is on and trip an alarm. Erika is already there with the lady of the house and goes down to see what it is. She catches the two their and pulls her gun while the brothers were enthralled by the book. Balz goes into her mind to get her to leave, while in there he sees her traumatic past and feels for her, he also thinks she's beautiful. Erika goes back up to the 2nd floor with the lady of the house. The 2 brothers argue over who gets the book Balthazar is desperate for it because he thinks he needs to get Devina's evil out of him. Sahvage wants to destroy the book before Mae can get it and resurrect her brother Rhoger. Balz hears a voice telling him to let it go, just let the book go. He realizes it's Lassiter who tells him love will heal him soon.

Sahvage takes the book to the house he is staying at, he is going to burn it in the boiler. Before he can Mae shows up with her gun and points it at him. She tracked him with his blood after a phone call came in to his cellphone from V who let it slip what happened between him and Balz. Sahvage gives the book to Mae and tells her goodbye, he can't help her anymore, she is determined to do this and is willing to shoot him to get what she wants. Mae goes home with the book and calls Tallah asking for her help. Tallah shows up at her house and Mae invites her in. Turns out since they summoned the book, Devina has been pretending to be Tallah the whole time, even cooking for Mae and Sahvage. She tells Mae Tallah is "long gone. She had nothing left to fight her with. It was like ripping off a wet band-aid". Mae is crushed.

Devina sees Rhoger in the tub and lets it loose that Rhoger was her virgin that got away. She is the one that killed Rhoger. Devina had kept him in the same dog cage Mae had broken out of. Sahvage shows up to Mae's to get his guns and walks in on her and Devina. Devina threatens to kill Sahvage if Mae doesn't give her the book. Mae decides to give Devina the book after she realizes how much she has given up for the path she was on. Mae throws the book to Devina, who (of course) doesn't keep her end of the deal and snaps Sahvage's neck. In her grief and rage Mae shoots Devina with the gun Sahvage had given her. Which pisses Devina off royally. She goes after Mae tossing her around the kitchen with her magic like a doll. Holding Mae with her magic she says she is going to burn the little house down with her brother, Sahvage's body, and Mae inside it for burning her expensive bag at the loft. Devina started multiple little fires in the house.

Sahvage somehow comes through the fire (alive) and rushes Devina, biting her in the neck, dragging her into the fire with himself. Mae yells out she is sorry and she loves him. Devina's magic is still holding her in place so she can't move. Mae sees a vision of Rhoger and Tallah, they tell her "all will be well", then they disappear. Vishous then shows up and carries Mae out of the house, as they leave through the garage, she see's other brothers outside. V puts her in Manny's mobile unit with Balthazar who is still nursing his ankle.

At the brotherhood training center, fighters were milling about as Rehv comes down. Many of the fighters have injuries, apparently they were attacked by Devina's shadows at the Commodore. Come to find out during the fight with the shadows, when Sahvage took down Devina, her shadows disappeared. Mae only has smoke inhalation and she wants to leave, to go to Tallah's cottage. Rehv asks what happened to Sahvage. V tells him he apparently came back from a catastrophic wound and saved the day, dragging Devina and her book into the fire. Rehv goes in to talk to Mae, he apologizes for lying to her about the book. Reading her grid, all he sees is pain and grief, no anger at him. When Mae finds out about the fight with the brothers and the shadows, then the shadows disappearing, she says it was Sahvage. Sahvage had saved the brotherhood. Rehv nods in agreement and tells her all the fighters are out in the hall to honor her as Sahvage's female. He tells her she's not as alone as she thinks she is. Mae tells Rehv she will always be alone without Sahvage.

Rehv takes Mae back to Tallah's cottage, where she will live forever more. She goes in and takes a shower. When she opens the bathroom door, Sahvage is standing there. Mae is shocked and screams, he sits her down while she is sputtering and asking how he can be alive. Sahvage tells her he can't die. She asked if he was a warlock, he said no, his cousin Rahvyn had magic. When he died trying to save her, she brought him back by using a spell in the book, it made him immoral, but in the process Rahvyn disappeared. That is why he didn't want her to use the book on Rhoger, he was afraid she'd disappear. He says he had to disappear all those years ago because there was no way to explain his situation. He told her with the exception of a few of the brothers he had seen the night before, everyone he knew was gone. He didn't want that for her or Rhoger.

Mae realizes he would have lived that first night she met him, that she didn't really save him. He tells her she saved him in the ways it counts, his heart was dead, and she brought him back. She tells him she loves him and is sorry she for her singlemindedness on saving her brother. They go upstairs and make love. After that Sahvage gets a phone call from Murhder and tells him to come to Luhcas house. Him and Mae head over there, when they get there all the brothers are there, including Wrath. They all offer him their dagger hand and tell him welcome back. Wrath offers him his place back with the brotherhood. Sahvage feels like his long life is going to be a lot better now, he went from having nothing, to everything. Just then Elon walks outside and towards him. When she got close he says Rahvyn. She is back, but her dark hair and eyes are gone, they are both silver now. He tells her he has looked all over the world for her for two centuries. She tells him she wasn't anywhere, she was in time, and had traveled all this way to see him. They hug and he introduces her to Mae.

Lassiter is standing back watching, V comes over and asks him what's doing, Lassiter says he never saw her in any of his visions or the scrying bowls. He says he saw everything as it is, but not her. V tells him none of his visions are about himself, always about others. Hmmmm.

In the epilogue we learn that Davina is not dead after all (did we really think it would be that easy?), she shuffles out of the burnt house debris, after arguing with the book, she takes it with her. Her skin and hair is burn, she will need time to heal what has been done to her, but says she'll be back after she cuts a whole in reality and climbs back in her loft.
