"In the course of his dying from the cleansing, he learned that, in fact, there was a Fade. And yes, people of different traditions and faiths all went to the same place." -Trez[1]
The following is a list of places in The Black Dagger Brotherhood universe that are not located on earth and the lore surrounding them.
Dhunhd[]
Every Christian's nightmare times a thousand[2], it's said that those who commit suicide are condemned to Dhunhd The Omega's personal lair is warm, full of candelabras, and oily, black beasts fill his bed.[3] His receiving area is a ballroom of marble that shifts from black to metallic blood-red depending on the angle of the observer.[4]
The Fade[]
The vampire term for Heaven, the entry to which is always depicted as a white door. Those who choose not to enter are doomed to fade into nothingness. Inside, the dead are surrounded by love and their loved ones.
Heaven[]
Manse of Souls[]
An immense castle is surrounded by green lawns, stone walls, and a moat; the huge oak doors only open for the dead and for Nigel.[5] At "night," torches burn along the battlements and turrets.[6] Inside, the dead are surrounded by love and their loved ones. A red banner flies from the wall to signify winning Vincent diPietro's soul in the first round.[7] There's a shed out back.[8]
Lawns[]
The four archangels- Bertie, Byron, Colin, and Nigel- play croquet on the North Lawn and dine on the South.
Private Quarters[]
Colin[]
Against the tree line on the west side of the castle, Colin's tent is squat, low-hung, small, and modest. He bathes in the stream in the woods behind it and when he's not sleeping with Nigel, he sleeps on a cot with one blanket and no pillow. There are, however, plenty of books and a steamer trunk at the foot of the cot. There's no ground cover, only grass under foot.[9]
Nigel[]
Inside an ornate purple and red tent outside the Manse of Souls, Nigel's quarters are richly furnished with satin drapes, Oriental rugs, a raspberry silk chaise lounge, a low bedding platform and a marble-topped French bombe chest that serves as a bar and is stocked with Baccarat decanters. The bathroom is white marble with coral and sapphire damask drapes.[10] Officially, Colin has his own quarters, but he usually lives with Nigel, unless they're fighting.[11]
Hell[]
Well of Souls[]
It's only accessible via Devina's mirror or if she takes you there herself.[12] The black walls that extend upwards for miles bulge with the writhing of the tortured souls trapped inside, any of which she can call down to floor level or even retrieve if she feels like it.[13] The room where she takes her victims to play with has a stone floor and is lit with candles; in the centre there's a blood and wax-stained table that she uses for torture. It reeks of sulphur.[14]
Inside the walls themselves, you're steeped in permanent darkness that rots you from the inside out and chokes you in sorrow and despair. The lucky receive special attention from demons who rip them apart, only to heal immediately so they can be hurt again.[15]
The In-Between[]
Called "Purgatory" by some, the In Between is a way station on one's way to eternity[16] and is the Creator's jurisdiction.[17] Most people end up there because either they won't let go or someone won't let them go.[17] The In Between is different for everyone, for Wellsie and Jim Heron, it was an endless, windy, grey plain scattered with people stuck there, slowly disintegrating into dust that thickly covers the ground. Two things remain the same for everyone:[16]
- If one stays too long, they can't ever leave.
- Those who do manage to leave lose their memories of the place.
The Other Side[]
The pocket dimension that contains the Scribe Virgin's quarters and the Sanctuary of the Chosen.
