This page is dedicated to official policy for the Black Dagger Brotherhood universe wiki and is subject to change should the community become more active and if problems arise. Violations will be removed and repeat or particularly egregious offenders will be banned.
Content[]
Please note that every fact compiled on this Wikia has been collected by dedicated fans working hours, days, sometimes even weeks and months to get it to you and to verify its correctness. We do our best to be a repository for this series for your benefit. Theft of this information to put on your own web pages is plagiarism and it is morally wrong. You harm the fandom in stealing this hard work and claiming credit for it. In addition, Wikia's licensing policy is strictly enforced. DO NOT STEAL.
Please do not post information that is not novel canon-compliant, including rumours and speculation. This is a Wikia only for facts, up to current canon (whatever novel that may be or whatever official marketing materials J.R. Ward and her publisher post regarding an upcoming novel, such as official release dates, etc). Any un-related content that does not contribute in a meaningful way such as ramblings, spam, etc. will be removed.
Copyrighted/Trademarked Property[]
Do not upload to this Wikia any song lyrics, trademarked brands, images that are from unaffiliated Black Dagger Brotherhood copyrighted material (for example:: random images found in magazines of actors who may look like the characters in your mind), etc. -- most especially images containing nudity and/or extremely violent or bloody content (anything skirting a hard R or NC-17 rating), as they are not allowed by Wikia's Terms of Service and could cause this site to be deleted. Images of book covers and official merchandise are allowed here, however, with proper credit given.
Fanfiction[]
J.R. Ward and her publisher have requested that no fanfiction be written for this series, and they see such transformative works as copyright infringing. Do not post any fanfiction or links to fanfiction for the Black Dagger Brotherhood or any of its spin-off series here.
Fanart[]
Fanart is allowed on this site, with proper credit to the original artist (make sure you get the artist's permission before posting the image or link to their image here, however). Fanart must be rated no higher than "R" -- no gore and no full-frontal nudity or images depicting an actual sexual act are allowed. Fanart cannot be in comic form or tell a story, as that breaks the line between fanart and fanfiction. One-shot images are fine, though.
Some art was uploaded by previous admins and will be left in place since in some cases it's unknown whether or not they themselves were the artists. If you recognize the art as your own and uncredited, pleased contact the admin.
Harassment and Bullying[]
Any harassment or bullying is not permitted. This includes ableism, homophobia, racism, sexism, and other forms of discrimination.
Style[]
Admin is still trying to apply consistent formatting across all pages for a uniform look and develop a written policy in regards to style. For now, the short version is to please use infoboxes for books, newsletters, and characters and to use galleries for multiple photos, such as book covers for various editions. Wherever a hard data point is used, such as a street address or obscure detail about a character, please cite the source using references. Refer to Wrath and Dark Lover for examples and follow existing formats wherever possible.
The Timeline is a bit of a mess due to canonical inconsistencies. Note how those are formatted and do the best you can, including sources and links wherever possible.
If you have any questions on contributions, please feel free to ask admin.
Book Pages[]
Each section save for the quote, infobox, and summary should formatted as a Heading. Some pages have a reminder that this wiki contains spoilers, however, this is a courtesy and not a requirement.
Categories[]
Currently, the categories applicable to the novels are as follows: Black Dagger Legacy, Books, Brotherhood series (for the character category, see Brotherhood), Fallen Angels, Lair of the Wolven, and Prison Camp.
Quote[]
A quote summing up the plot, theme, or is otherwise notable should be used.
Intro or Summary[]
The number of the novel, its series, and release date should be stated. Additionally, it's placement in terms of publication date compared to other series should be listed since many events tie into each other across the series. Some books and novellas, such as those in the Fallen Angels series, are not required reading for the main series, but not reading the Legacy series could create confusion. Please clarify wherever possible whether or not reading a book in another series can affect the plot of the main series.
Synopsis[]
The official publisher's story blurb should be included.
Main Characters[]
These will be the main pairing(s).
Other Characters[]
Most pages have the Brothers and/or Trainees listed separately, however, as the universe and list of characters and their various allegiances grow this might be becoming less important. For now, they will continue to be listed separately although conversation is encouraged as to whether or not they should remain as is, be integrated, or include other factions such as the Band of Bastards.
Others - Speaking Roles[]
This includes John Matthew since he can obviously communicate.
Mentioned or non-Speaking Roles[]
This includes animals or oblique references to characters without using names, such as the Band of Bastards passing the main characters on the sidewalk in Rapture.
Plot[]
Warning[]
It's a good idea to include a reminder that this wiki contains spoilers, especially when it comes to more recent books. Some include rather disturbing subjects, such as abuse, drug addiction, suicide, sexual assault, etc. Please let readers know what sort of topics are included so that they can make informed decisions about whether to continue or not. These warnings are a courtesy, not a requirement.
A précis appears on some pages whereas others are detailed chapter by chapter. At this point, any contribution is appreciated. The plot should be written in the present tense, but this isn't mandatory in the case of flashbacks as long as consistency is maintained throughout.
The first time a character, faction, or location is mentioned it should be linked to the appropriate page and subsection, if applicable. If a character only appears a few times, consider multiple links. Again, use your best judgment.
International Covers[]
Book covers should be listed here by country, format, or language: Title, publisher. For example, Audiobook: Dark Lover, published by Recorded Books. The original North American book cover should appear in the infobox.
Character Pages[]
Since not every section will be applicable for every character or that information may not be provided in the case of minor characters, those sections can be omitted where appropriate. Some pages have a reminder that this wiki contains spoilers, however, this is a courtesy and not a requirement.
Each section save for the quote, infobox, and summary should formatted as a Heading. Most of the page, except for the biography, should be written in the current tense. Deceased characters who have passed onto the afterlife and no longer play an active role in events can be written entirely in the past. Please provide links to other pages where applicable, but since proper nouns can appear multiple times on a page, such as a mate or best friend mentioned several times in a biography, there's no need to make every single instance a link. Use your best judgment.
Categories[]
Currently, the categories applicable to characters are subject to change and are as follows:
- Angel (the race)
- Animals
- Black Dagger Legacy (those appearing in the Legacy series)
- Brotherhood (for Brothers only)
- Brotherhood series (for those appearing in the main series)
- Characters
- Chosen
- Deceased (this includes characters who have died but not passed onto the afterlife such as Jane)
- Fallen Angels (those appearing in the Fallen Angels series)
- The Glymera
- Hellren
- Human
- Lair of the Wolven (for those appearing in the series of the same name)
- Prison Camp (those appearing in the series)
- Shadow
- Shellan
- Sympath
- Vampire
- Young
A person may have multiple species listed, especially in the case of half-breeds like Beth since she's appeared as both a human and a vampire on page even though in the novels she's been past her transition for far longer than she appeared as a pretrans in the books.
Quote[]
Ideally, a quote either describing the character or one that sums up their philosophy or attitude will appear at the top of the page with the Block Quote format and the source referenced. This is not always an option, for example, in the case of Therese's mahmen, Larisse, she's extremely ill and largely non-verbal so any quote in Where Winter Finds You wouldn't provide an accurate picture of who she is as a person.
Character Infobox[]
Please fill out as much information that can be confirmed as possible. Due to timeline inconsistencies, age is not a hard and fast requirement. Do not use photos of actors, models, or real people who match your headcanon of a character's appearance.
Intro or Summary[]
A brief description of the role the character plays and in which series they appear, this part is important because some characters appear in multiple series. If they are main characters in specific books, please list those as well for easy reference.
Biography[]
The entire plot of a character's book does not need to be repeated in their biography, although the significant events and how they affect the character's development should certainly appear. Their history is written in the past tense with current situations written in the present. For example, Mary's biography is written in the past tense, but since she continues to work at Safe Place, that part is written in the present.
Personality[]
Since interpretation of a personality can be subjective, try to rely on observations made by other characters rather than your own opinion whenever possible.
Physical Description[]
Signature scents can be included here in addition to their typical appearance.
Skills[]
Skills are non-mystical talents that a character has learned or honed.
Abilities[]
Abilities are often based on species since they are typically mystical in nature, so every vampire ability does not need to be repeated here. Unique abilities, such as Vishous' hand or Payne's healing, should certainly be listed.
Relationships[]
Each person's name should be listed as Sub-heading 1. Since paranormal romance tends to revolve around relationships, the entire history between a character and their mate does not need to be repeated, however, a brief synopsis is appropriate for quick reference without going through a book's page or the biography.
Trivia[]
This section is for pretty much anything that doesn't fit neatly in other categories.
Appearances[]
The novels, novellas, and newsletters in which the character has a speaking role should be listed (animals are the obvious exclusion). Ones in which they are merely referred to should not be listed unless their presence is crucial to the plot.
References[]
Please use the template References List.
Locations[]
Some locations deserve their own page, such as the mansion and Havers' clinic. This can be due to size, history, people, or some combination thereof. Note that the mansion has history as the first Heading, followed by the above-ground main house floor by floor, then the training centre and other underground facilities.
On the page for Caldwell, the categories are in alphabetical order (Bars & Nightclubs followed by Businesses then Cafes & Restaurants and so on). Each location name should be formatted as Sub-Heading 1 with details in a bulletin list. If a subsection is appropriate, such as different floors in a mansion, then use Sub-Heading 2.
Newsletters[]
Since the newsletter can be a font of lore, trivia, and general shenanigans, each one has its own page for quick reference and because not every past issue is listed on the official page. There's one applicable category: Newsletter. As with other pages, add links where appropriate.
Quote[]
As with other pages, this should be formatted as Block Quote.
Intro or Summary[]
State the number of the publication (first, second, third, etc) and, if it can be found online, please provide a link.
Book Infobox[]
Obviously not every field, such as publisher or ISBN, is applicable.
Characters[]
Speaking Characters[]
The columnists and any guests should be listed here.
Mentioned Characters[]
Anyone mentioned but not directly contributing to the article should go here.
Columns[]
Each column should have it's own Heading followed by a brief summary.
