Possession is the fifth novel of the Fallen Angels series set in the same universe as The Black Dagger Brotherhood series. It follows Rapture and precedes Immortal.
Along with Black Dagger Legacy, Black Dagger Brotherhood: Prison Camp, and Lair of the Wolven, Fallen Angels is a spin-off from the main series Black Dagger Brotherhood. Unlike the other spin-offs, this is a stand-alone series and Black Dagger Brotherhood is not required in order to fully understand the lore, characters, and story-lines of Fallen Angels. Each book was published alternately with the main series, but chronologically the series more or less takes place at the same time as Lover Unleashed. Possession was released after Lover at Last and The King.

Chapter 1[]
Cait Douglass goes to a high-end salon to change up her hair.
Duke Phillips goes to his psychic who tells him that his aura is blacker than usual.
Chapter 2[]
Jim's stewing because Devina told him she'd have to think about his offer to trade a victory for Sissy's soul, then gets his ass chewed out for by Nigel for having made the offer. Knowing that divided attention and in-fighting is a guarantee for failure, Adrian calls on Colin for back up before Jim and Nigel come to more blows.
Chapter 3[]
Cait's hair's now blonde, but she's lost a little gold shell earring.
Colin can't do much about either Nigel or Jim and Adrian asks him to tell him the name of the next soul. He refuses because of what the Maker would do if the broke the rules so flagrantly. Adrian begs him for whatever guidance he can give.
Chapter 4[]
Duke breaks up a fight at the Iron Mask and loses his vintage Rolex in the process.
Cait goes back to the salon to find her missing earring, but the stylist doesn't remember her. Afterwards, she meets with a friend, Teresa Goldman, at a cafe to watch a local musician play. Cait tells her that she'd taken some art classes with Sissy Barten and intends to attend the funeral. Teresa informs her that Cait's ex's, Thom, girlfriend is pregnant and due that month.
Chapter 5[]
Devina uses Cait's earring to cast a spell on her and panicking at the thought of losing another round, calls her therapist.
Duke goes to see an ex-girlfriend to give her $500 and asks him for help with their son, who's been acting up and getting into trouble for stealing a laptop from school, because he's afraid of Duke.
Chapter 6[]
The musician, GB, approaches Cait and with Teresa's help, gets her number.
Chapter 7[]
Devina drops Sissy on Jim's porch in exchange for a victory flag. His reaction to Devina frightens Sissy, who looks in terrible shape.
Leaving the cafe, Cait and Duke's eyes meet and have an instant attraction. She's rattled by the magnetism between them and the sheer size of him.
Chapter 8[]
Even though it's only been weeks, Sissy felt like she was in hell for an eternity and cuddles with Dog.
Chapter 9[]
Sissy's having difficulties accepting that she's free of Devina's clutches and wants to go back to her family. Jim promises her that Devina will have to go through him to get to her. The paper boy comes by, who happens to be the little brother of Sissy's best friend, but he cannot perceive her, which breaks her heart.
Chapter 10[]
After banging some other chick the night before, GB gets up to go to work on a road crew and thinks about Cait. Also on his way to work and thinking about Cait, Duke gets a call from his psychic warning him about a crossroads involving a brunette. A strange guy shows up and tells Duke he's supposed to partner up with him for the day.
Chapter 11[]
Cait goes to a concert where GB's singing backup and runs into Duke who asks her to meet him at the Iron Mask when he gets off work at 3:30. His directness and arrogance puts her off-balance. The first time they spoke she'd mentioned she was at the cafe to see GB so Duke looked him up on Facebook, saw that he was performing tonight, and stopped by the theatre in the hopes that she'd be there, too. Although he hadn't realized she was there to meet up with GB.
Chapter 12[]
A jealous employee who once hooked up with GB "loses" Cait's backstage pass and when she goes to Will Call to get the ticket GB said he'd left for her, they can't find her on the list and the show's sold out.
Chapter 13[]
Sissy asks Jim to take her to her parents even though it's late enough that they'll be asleep because she can't bear to see them in pain if they were awake. When they walk through the front door without opening it, it hits her that she's dead and starts crying.
Chapter 14[]
Curious, Cait drives past the Iron Mask and sees Duke working the front line. Parking at the theatre again, someone follows her in the parkade and, sensing evil and danger, she runs for the elevator. The lights start going out. They run after her, but she gets in the elevator and the doors shut, but then gets stuck. Someone bangs on the doors, panicking, she calls 911.
Chapter 15[]
Walking through the house, Sissy remembers her childhood and is saying goodbye to her old life and family. Her sister wakes and sees her, Sissy tells her that she's okay, but she has to go now and be sure to tell their parents that.
Chapter 16[]
A cop's dispatched and helps her out of the elevator. After giving a statement, she gets home safely and finds that she has a voicemail from GB apologizing for missing her.
Swerving to avoid a cat, Jim and Sissy get into an accident. Dazed from a concussion, he becomes combative with first responders, more worried about Sissy than his own well-being. She's standing off to the side, invisible to everyone but him. He tries to manipulate the minds of the humans, but fails and passes out from pain when they move him.
Chapter 17[]
After sleeping for a few hours, Cait wakes up an hour before Duke asked her to meet him and goes to the Iron Mask.
Duke's been too aggressive all night and his boss has to step in, worried he's going to kill someone. She orders him to take a couple of nights off, ignoring his protestations; she partly blames herself because she hadn't realized he'd worked the last 25 nights in a row. She lets him know that he has a visitor who doesn't fit in with the usual crowd and she's waiting in the interrogation room.
Turning off the camera in the room, Duke seduces Cait.
Chapter 18[]
They have sex. Afterwards, one of the other guys in security comes to check on him and is surprised to learn that Duke's with a woman since he doesn't normally do that. She can't believe she just did that since she doesn't do that sort of thing either, but that doesn't stop her from giving him her number. He walks her to her car, doing his best to shield the stares of his looky-lou coworkers, who then try to pester him for details.
Chapter 19[]
Jim wakes up in St. Francis where Sissy's stayed with him, still invisible. She tries to keep him from leaving, concerned over his injuries. Colin arrives, interrupting their argument, and Jim becomes jealous. Medical staff arrives and tries to prevent him from leaving. Jim throws a chair through the window and jumps out the hole, trusting Colin to look after Sissy. He hobbles away on his cast when Devina pulls up in a Mercedes and offers him a ride.
Trying to see where Jim went, Sissy pushes into the cluster of staff and accidentally possesses one of them, something Colin says she shouldn't be able to do. He has to talk her through leaving the nurse's body.
Chapter 20[]
Devina and Jim trade barbs and she tries to take him to a hotel to "try and make this work." He calls her delusional and leaves the car, she clips him with it, getting his blood on the hood ornament. Blood that she can use for a spell.
Chapter 21[]
Colin drops Sissy off at Jim's place. She's angry and frustrated because she doesn't understand her situation, what's happening to her, or anything really. Tearing off the dust covers on the furniture, she burns them in the fireplace and runs out to the road where a car's coming, desperate to be seen by someone and feel normal. Jim pulls her out of the way and she takes out her frustration on him.
She doesn't understand why he saved her. He growls at her that he saw her dead body and because he was too late to save her, he's trying to do the right thing now. He doesn't understand who he is, either. Just because he's an angel doesn't mean he has anymore answers than she does.
Chapter 22[]
Sissy apologizes and asks him to hold her because she's in need of personal connection to ground her.
Chapter 23[]
Duke calls Cait and they make plans to meet at a diner for dinner. Then GB calls and they make plans to meet for lunch.
Sissy took one of the Harleys to pick up some groceries, discovering that she can make herself visible if she concentrates, and makes breakfast for Jim, Adrian, and herself. She doesn't remember anything after leaving the grocery store and before ending up in hell, of which she remembers everything. The ignorance is eating at her and asks him for answers.
Jim and Adrian argue again over where Jim's focus is.
Chapter 24[]
Cait meets GB at the theatre where he's rehearsing and she explains what happened the night before, but obviously doesn't tell him about Duke.
Devina's frustrated because she'd had to resort to taking on Sissy's appearance to just cuddle with Jim the night before. She'd scared Cait into running into the theatre where GB was because that plays into her end game and she was the cat that caused Jim's wreck, which was because she's upset over Jim's preoccupation with Sissy. She meets with Adrian.
Chapter 25[]
Cait and GB talk over sandwiches. She finds him rather charming, but is torn between him and Duke.
Chapter 26[]
Doing a favour for Jim, Adrian distracts Devina, who tries to drive a wedge between the two angels.
Jim takes Sissy to Devina's old loft where she starts to remember.
Chapter 27[]
Bertie and Byron are worried about the state of the war and that Colin and Nigel have both disappeared without a word. Colin tells them that Nigel's not coming back, his oblique report seemingly alludes to suicide. With their leader gone and Colin effectively so with the loss of his lover, Bertie and Byron set about fortifying the Manse of Souls to protect against demonic infiltration.
Chapter 28[]
Telling Sissy what happened to her, Jim breaks down and she has to reassure him that it wasn't his fault at all. He tells her how his mother was murdered when he wasn't even old enough to legally drive. Her stomach begins to feel strange and they discover the same pattern that had been carved into her belly is now glowing red; she's terrified that Devina's inside her.
Chapter 29[]
Cait's ex-boyfriend calls to tell her that his girlfriend, the one with whom he cheated upon her, gave birth last night to a boy named Thomas after his dad. She manages to get some closure and feels like a weight's been lifted off her. Afterwards, she meets Duke.
Chapter 30[]
Devina meets with her therapist, who's the opposite of Devina: not much to look at on the outside, but is genuinely a good person, which makes Devina feel poorly about herself on top of Adrian's impotence.
Chapter 31[]
Cait and Duke have sex in a nearby park.
Chapter 32[]
In the basement of the theatre, GB's freaking out after having killed a woman when Devina finds him. She's posing as a representative of RCA and wants to talk to him about his music.
Chapter 33[]
Adrian fills Sissy in on the war and Jim's past with XOps. She realizes that she's probably been distracting Jim and Adrian reassures her that Jim's back on track now. In getting the answers she's been looking for, she learns that there are other innocents like her still trapped in hell.
Jim's surprised to find the drawbridge to the Manse of Souls is up and no one's around. Searching, he discovers Nigel's body in his tent, having plunged a crystal dagger into his own chest. Shocked, he knows that somehow his actions caused this and that the drawbridge is up because heaven's no longer secure.
Chapter 34[]
Cait and Duke finally get around to having dinner, but he dodges questions about why he dropped out of college. They're awkward because he's not much of a conversationalist.
Chapter 35[]
Adrian and Sissy argue over rescuing the other souls in Devina's well of souls and Adrian starts to see in her what Jim does since she's willing to risk herself to save others.
Chapter 36[]
Colin attacks Jim, blaming him for Nigel's death, and they're interrupted by Dog who has to resort to his true form to get through to Colin.
Chapter 37[]
GB calls Cait and make plans to have lunch again. Then Duke calls her and they have phone sex.
Chapter 38[]
Jim returns home and Sissy cuddles with him. When he tells her that his boss died, she asks how Colin's taking that. In truth, it's Devina in Sissy's form again and she's upset over the change, which sets off her OCD, and because she wanted to be the one to kill him. The fear makes her lose her control over her form and her true self begins to show so she runs away.
According to the Creator's rules, if either Devina or Nigel died during the contest then Jim will take their place and another saviour's chosen. Devina suspects Nigel took his own life to separate her and Jim.
Chapter 39[]
Jim fills Adrian in on what happened to Nigel.
Duke has another ride-along at his day job working for Caldwell parks. The new guy warns him that he's coming up on a crossroads where he'll have to make a decision. Startled by the odd colour of the man's eyes, which are eerily like the newbie from the other day, he asks him if he knows a brunette. The guy says that he does and warns him to stay away from her, just like Duke's psychic had said. That same psychic leaves him another message just then warning him again that he's in danger. Despite this, Duke's disinclined to trust him.
Chapter 40[]
Cait goes to the theatre for her lunch date with GB and finds the place is swarming with cops who tell her a woman was murdered. She asks if it's anything to do with the person who chased her the other night, which catches the attention of one of the detectives, who gets the details of what happened. Upon learning that she was to meet GB, de la Cruz warns her that he's going to be busy for quite awhile.
Cait's been neat, organized, and one to follow the rules since her brother died in a skateboarding accident while not wearing a helmet. She felt that if he'd been prepared and worn a helmet like he was supposed to, he would have lived. No amount of organization and preparedness can stave off every possible accident; a colour-coded wardrobe can't stop a murderer. She thinks about Duke and GB and knows that Duke is definitely not the safe choice, but her ex had been safe and yet she still got her heart broken.
Driving aimlessly, Cait finds herself at St. Patrick's Cathedral where she meets a small white dog and a curiously wise janitor.
Chapter 41[]
Since Sissy's not giving up, Adrian gives her a book of Eddie's because it was something Eddie would consult when he was worried, although he has no idea what it is.
Jim fills Adrian in on his day with Duke, who's full of "bad juju." He'd only stopped by the house to check on Sissy and Adrian reassures him that he'll take care of her for him. When they have dinner, she makes them pray with her, which brings back happy memories for Jim.
Chapter 42[]
On his way to Cait's place, Duke suffers an attack of conscience. Originally, he just wanted to sleep with her to get back at GB, who uses women, anyway, but he finds that there's more to what's between them than just sex. He tries to remind himself that she's capable of making her own decisions, too. As they talk over dinner, Cait mentions that her hair is dyed, which instantly arouses Duke's suspicions.
Chapter 43[]
Sissy's trying to read the Latin in the book Adrian gave her and Adrian tells her some more about Devina and her mirror. When she says she saw Devina hurting Jim, Adrian warns her not to let Jim know that and she learns that Jim traded a victory to get her free.
Thinking about his original intentions towards Cait and feeling that, that's corrupted what's between them, Duke says he has to leave and tells her it's him, not her. She believes that, like her, he's been closed off from other people, trying to protect himself from getting hurt again. She won't beg, but she does ask him to reconsider and she thinks it would be a huge mistake to not give this a chance. He asks her if she's seeing anyone else.
Chapter 44[]
Cait realizes that she doesn't feel the same way about GB as she does Duke and says that Duke's the only one she's interested in. They have sex.
Downstairs and invisible at Cait's place, Jim's worried that things seem way too quiet, as far as he can tell, nothing's doing with Duke, who was pretty tight-lipped during their day together. That's when Devina shows up out front. She warns him that without Nigel, the others are vulnerable and he's going to have to replace Nigel. The only way out is for both of them to quit and refuse to play the game anymore.
Chapter 45[]
Even though Cait and Duke are having a good time, he still wonders if she'll leave him for his brother like Nicole did.
Devina tries to convince Jim, but he doesn't trust her.
Chapter 46[]
Duke wakes Cait from a nightmare of being chasing in the parkade by a rotting corpse and she tells him about the incident and that she's going to let GB know she's not going to see him anymore. There's a bright flash of light in the backyard and Duke goes to investigate.
Chapter 47[]
The flash was Jim casting a protective spell over the house because he needs food and sleep. After getting out of the shower, he finds Sissy in his bed and she tries to seduce him. He refuses, despite being incredibly tempted, but when he goes to kiss her, Sissy knocks on his bedroom door and calls from the hallway. "Sissy" reverts to Devina before disappearing.
While passing by Jim's room, Sissy heard him talking to himself and knocks on his door, asking if he's okay. He's obviously rattled.
Chapter 48[]
In the morning, Cait and Duke make plans to meet again tomorrow since she's going to Sissy's funeral today. They're both looking forward to seeing each other again. He's thrown by his attraction to Cait and being connected to another person again. Jim meets him at work again.
Chapter 49[]
GB's getting questioned by the police who have reports from someone else at the theatre that he'd fought with the victim, the same woman who was supposed to have reserved Cait's ticket and backstage pass. He most definitely killed her in a brutal fashion and had planned ahead of time, making sure to bring gloves to avoid leaving evidence. They also have video footage of him leaving the basement around the time of the murder, but don't appear to have any of him going into the basement with her.
Chapter 50[]
Cait runs into GB at the funeral because the Barten family had asked him to perform and they make plans to ride to the burial together.
At her request, Adrian takes Sissy to her funeral where the only other person to see her is a janitor who encourages her to sit on a regal, decorative chair that's normally marked as off-limits, before disappearing.
Chapter 51[]
The cemetery's one of Duke and Jim's check-ins for work with the city parks and rec. He sees GB and Cait standing together and gets angry at his brother. Seeing Duke, Cait runs to him for a hug, which confuses, then infuriates, GB. GB asks Cait for a ride back since they came together, but before they leave, Cait and Duke make plans to talk that evening. He worries about leaving GB and Cait together even though he doesn't think his brother's a murderer.
Sissy sees a halo around GB's head and she figures he's the soul. She asks Jim if he's an angel, too, because of the halo and Jim has one, too. Since he can't see halos, he has no idea what she's talking about and she thinks it's weird he can't see her halo. Jim's jealous that Eddie's spending time with her while he's busy watching over Duke.
Chapter 52[]
Cait feels extremely uncomfortable in the car with GB and tries to fill his cold silence with apologies. De la Cruz calls him to have him come down to the station for more questioning. When Cait drops him off and he doesn't think she's watching, GB looks beyond furious.
Back at the church, Cait carefully packs up Sissy's art to make it easier for her family. A janitor helps her carry her easels to her car and gives her some wise advice, but she thinks he just has dementia. She realizes she left her sketchpad at the theatre when she goes to get it, she learns that the woman who'd been jealous over GB the other night is the one who'd been murdered.
GB truly hates his brother. He'd seduced Nicole just to hurt Duke, and to ensure that he learned what happened, GB poked holes in the condoms beforehand since he knew that she wasn't on the pill. Duke beat him so badly for it that he needed dental implants. Devina calls GB and urges him to do something about his current situation. She tells him to meet her at the food court in the mall because she has "a lifetime contract" to offer him. He decides to hell with it since the cops must have something on him, so he might as well do something big on his way out.
Chapter 53[]
GB calls Cait and tells her that Duke had lied when he said he didn't have any family because they're brothers. He really does want to be with her, but there are things about Duke that she doesn't know and he asks her to meet him at the food court in the mall so he can explain. There, she finds Duke sitting with a boy who looks like a younger version of him and assumes it's his son. She leaves without talking to Duke and calls GB once she's back in her car to get Duke's address so she can ambush him at home. Instead of waiting for him, she gives Duke's roommate an angry message before leaving.
Chapter 54[]
Duke drops off his nephew, Tony, at home after giving him a dressing down for bullying kids at school. He offers to hang out more often with him since the boy lacks any role male role model and they make plans to play basketball.
Duke's roommate calls to tell him what Cait had said and Duke immediately calls his brother, who tells him that he "can't keep women from" GB. He tells Duke not to bother trying to win her back because he doesn't stand a chance against GB. Realizing he's not going to get anywhere with GB, Duke goes to Cait's to tell her that Tony's GB's son, not his. She starts to tell him that she doesn't want to see either of them again, but then she remembers the janitor at the church advising her to "talk it out" and lets him in.
He explains that he doesn't consider GB family because GB was sent to a juvie facility by the time they were ten because he was killing animals, setting fires, hurting other children, and exhibiting all the classic psychopathy traits. GB hated Duke for being kept at the orphanage where they grew up whereas he was sent away. They didn't see each other again until they were both attending Union and GB seduced Duke's girlfriend from him and knocked her up just to hurt Duke. Even though he was in his senior year of pre-med, he dropped out and withdrew from the world because of how hurt he'd been by the whole thing; she understands exactly what that type of pain is like.
The night they'd met Duke was going to chew GB out because he'd paid his brother's child for him support yet again. Cait puts two and two together and sees that Duke had wanted to get back at GB. Duke confirms that was how things started for him, but everything changed for him and he hadn't figured out how to tell her. He'd never thought that GB would care since he's pretty much ignored Duke since college. He thanks her for listening to him and understands if she doesn't ever want to see him again, he just asks her to stay away from GB for her own safety.
In a seeming non-sequitur, Cait asks if he heard about the girl who was murdered at the theatre and that the police are looking at GB as a person of interest. Duke warns her that GB is capable of anything so if she knows anything then she should notify the police immediately, again, he begs her not to let him into her house and she promises.
Chapter 55[]
While outside Cait's house and listening to Duke, Jim gets the sick feeling that he has the wrong soul and calls Adrian to ask exactly what Colin had told him at the beginning of the round. Looking back, Adrian realizes he misinterpreted the clue Colin had given him since he couldn't give the name outright. They're pretty sure that GB's the soul, not Duke. Devina interrupts the phone call and Jim entices her away from Cait's place. Although he's successful, he dies a little on the inside at the thought of being with her again, especially after having Sissy in his life.
GB's been sitting outside Cait's and saw her go from a pissed off greeting to hugging him goodbye. He brought the same type of gloves he'd used when he killed the woman at the theatre, a knife, and is dressed all in black. Finding the front door unlocked, he sneaks in to find her napping in the living room.
Chapter 56[]
Cait finds herself in the dark and at GB's mercy as he kisses her neck then throws her into the wall. He tells her that he killed that other woman for her since that had put Cait in danger; she'd had to leave after her ticket had been "lost" and then was chased through the parkade. Throwing her on the floor, he starts to undress her, but is soon attacked when Duke kicks in the door.
Now free, Cait runs upstairs to get the 9mm autoloader she keeps in her nightstand and when she returns, Duke's been stabbed during the fight with GB. Drawing on GB, she orders him to drop the knife, but he draws another one and stabs Duke in the gut. She shoots GB several times and checks on Duke before calling 911; he's sure he's going to die.
Chapter 57[]
It's getting late and Jim hasn't returned, which worries Adrian and Sissy. When she hears him in the shower, she waits for him and sees nail marks down his back. She lays into him for fucking around instead of fighting the war, especially when he admits that they lost the round because he was fucking around, but doesn't specify that it was Devina masquerading as her.
Chapter 58[]
Cait and Duke are both in the hospital after the fight. He decides he wants to go back to college, maybe even go into medicine like he'd always planned.
