"Safe Place was exactly that- a safe place for female victims of domestic violence to come for shelter and rehabilitation with their young. And after Marissa had spent countless, useless centuries in the glymera, being nothing but the unclaimed betrothed of the king, she had found her calling here, in service to those hwo had been at best verbally abused, at worst horrifically treated.

Men were not allowed inside."

-Marissa[1]

Safe Place is a domestic violence shelter for female vampires founded by Marissa in 2006.

Facility[]

The main building is a no-frills three story house in a human neighbourhood, but with enough privacy to protect the inhabitants. There's unpainted wainscoting that's a hundred years old, brass lighting fixtures, and six suites upstairs. Most of the equipment and furniture is older. A braided runner lines the narrow upstairs hallway and at the end of the hall there's an oval oculus.[2] The attic bedroom has two twin beds, a thin area rug, worn curtains, threadbare bedspreads, and a small pink and white lamp on a dresser in the corner.[3]

The Wellesandra Annex contains a community room, a large secondary kitchen, and four bedroom suites.[2]

History[]

Marissa originally purchased the property to assert her independence when Havers had kicked her out of the family home and she was forced to live at the Black Dagger Brotherhood's mansion. When it became apparent that the vampire race needed social services, Wrath put her in charge of developing a program and she enlisted Mary's help.

Rules[]

  • Residents can stay as long as they need at no cost.
  • Males are not allowed inside.
  • Not so much a rule, but records are handwritten due to cost of technical infrastructure and Marissa's old-fashioned preference for hard copies.[4]

Safe Place[]

  • This large colonial house is located in a human neighbourhood[5] and has six underground bedrooms and a commercial-grade kitchen[6]
  • All doors are secured with electronic locks and CCTV monitors the exterior.
  • Cursive lettering on the welcome mat literally says "welcome"[7] and long thin windows flank the front door.[8]
  • A mirror hangs by the front door in the shallow foyer.[8]
  • Quilted drapes hang from the windows.[7]
  • The Wellesandra Wing was built using funds from a set of rubies that Tohrment had donated after his shellan's death.[9]

The Resident Director's office is in an upstairs bedroom.[10] She trained in public healthcare at NYU.[11]

Staff[]

Including Mary, there are seven counselors on staff.[2]
