The Jackal is the first book of the Black Dagger Brotherhood: Prison Camp series by JR Ward and is followed by The Wolf. In the main Black Dagger Brotherhood series, it falls between The Sinner and the novella A Warm Heart in Winter.

Synopsis[]

The location of the glymera’s notorious prison camp was lost after the raids. When a freak accident provides Nyx clues to where her sister may still be doing time, she becomes determined to find the secret subterranean labyrinth. Embarking on a journey under the earth, she learns a terrible truth—and meets a male who changes everything forever.

The Jackal has been in the camp for so long he cannot recall anything of the freedom he once knew. Trapped by circumstances out of his control, he helps Nyx because he cannot help himself. After she discovers what happened to her sister, getting her back out becomes a deadly mission for them both.

United by a passion they can’t deny, they work together on an escape plan for Nyx—even though their destiny is to be forever apart. And as the Black Dagger Brotherhood is called upon for help, and Rhage discovers he has a half-brother who’s falsely imprisoned, a devious warden plots the deaths of them all…even the Brothers.

The book opens with a car accident. Posie and Nyx are driving along a road and hit a pretrans vampire. The vampire tells her that he has escaped nearby from a prison. From this Nyx knows the location of the prison and intends to break in and find her sister, Janelle, who had been falsely accused of murder.

Once she breaks into the prison, she meets The Jackal and they have an immediate sexual attraction. She also meets Kane, Lucan, Apex, and Mayhem. There is many discussions about trying to get Nyx out of the prison safely, without the notice of the guards and The Command, but Nyx refuses until she finds her sister. The group comes up with a plan to take Nyx to the Wall - a wall that lists all name of deceased prisoners. Once at the Wall, Nyx finds Janelle's name and comes to terms that her sister died in prison. During all this, the relationship between The Jackal and Nyx progresses.

The prison goes into lockdown as an intruder becomes known. The group then plan again to get Nyx out of the prison. Kane directs Nyx how to get out of the prison, but they are caught. The Jackal is also caught by The Command.

It is revealed that Janelle is The Command and alive, though it becomes quicky aware that Janelle died years ago and the woman before Nyx was no longer her sister. Nyx also comes to the realization that Janelle and The Jackal were lovers. The rest of the group is caught and the prison is evacuated. The Command plans to move her operation elsewhere and kill the group before she goes. Nyx ends up holding The Command hostage, but Kane's sacrifice creates chaos and the prison begins to cave in.

The Jackal ends up being freed and quickly gets Nyx to escape the prison. Before she leaves, she tries to get him to come with her, but he refuses. He informs her he must save his child, his child with The Command. Nyx ends up escaping with The Jackal returning into the prison.

In the prison, The Jackal finds The Command and beats her almost to death after she tells him she killed their child. She ends up being killed by a creature she kept. The Jackal tries to find his child's body.

Out of the prison, Diedrich finds Nyx. Nyx is nursed back to health by Posie and advises her family of Janelle's death avoiding telling them what became of her, and that she was technically still alive. Diedrich and Nyx go to the King for help and Rhage, V, Diedrich, Z, and Phury all go back to the prison to find The Jackal. They find The Jackal alive and he informs Nyx that The Command is dead.

Back at the house, The Jackal meets the pretrans, realizing that this is in fact his son, Peter. Peter, The Jackal, and Nyx hug and have a happy reunion.
