"She is in all of us. She missed her creation up here, and when she freed herself, she was able to re-enter us. She is not gone- she is back where she started and is happiest for it."
The Scribe Virgin was created by the Maker alongside her brother and foil, the Omega; she, in turn, created the vampire race and gave birth to Payne and Vishous in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by JR Ward.
Biography[]
When the Scribe Virgin and her brother, the Omega, came into being, she was given the ability to create only once[1], thus setting off a war wherein the Omega's followers are set to exterminate the vampire race.
In 1701, the Scribe Virgin came to the Bloodletter because she wanted to physically experience conception and birth. Suspecting who she was and what she wanted, the Bloodletter refused to give her his seed unless he got custody of any male children. They agreed that he would gain custody of Vishous on his third birthday and have him for three centuries, training him as a warrior. The Scribe Virgin would get him after that period.[2] The form she took almost didn't survive the mating.
She had the ability to control how many children she conceived and their genders[2]; she chose to bear a boy and a girl. Although she gave Vishous over to the Bloodletter, she was aware of the abuse V suffered and she was forced to suffer, too.[2]
In an attempt to protect Payne, who had inherited the Bloodletter's warrior nature and therefore didn't fit into the ranks of the Chosen or really any of the roles available to noble females, she put her daughter into suspended animation in the early 19th century.[3]
Just before Vishous' 303rd birthday, she reveals that she's his mother and that she has decided he will become the next Primale who mate with her Chosen to produce the next generation of Brothers and Chosen.[2] When Phury volunteers to take Vishous' place, she permits him to because she knows Vishous is in love with "that human surgeon." Additionally, she renounces him as her son, freeing them both of all responsibilities to the other.[4]
Even after this, she sacrificed her only friendship and source of comfort, her birds, so that her son could have his shellan back as a ghost.[3] Figuring out what she had given up, he brought her birds to fill her tree again.[5]
She chose to pass away and gave her power to Lassiter to rule in her stead. Her essence resides in Beth's cat, Boo.
She changes the course of the war between lessers and vampires by visiting Butch. As a result of this conversation, Butch insists that Vishous is out of the field for his safety, as he means as much as Butch does to end the war. The Omega sees this as an unfair advantage. After all, the war is supposed to be fair. He informs their father, The Creator, of this and The Creator advises The Omega the location of all the lesser hearts that the brotherhood had. The Omega takes all the hearts to regain his power, but Devina intercepts and destroys her brother. Since The Omega and The Scribe Virgin's fates are tied, it's currently unknown if the Scribe Virgin is still in Boo.[6]
Personality[]
While the Scribe Virgin appears cold and remote to all, she holds affection[7] and regrets towards her children;[2] she experiences their pain and grief as her own.[1] Although she's said to smite those who offend her, specific instances or examples are not given. The closest incident is when Vishous calls her a "bitch" and she singes his eyebrows.[2]
The Scribe Virgin is exceedingly lonely especially since her relationships with her children are troubled. While her intentions weren't malicious and, as a deity, she felt she knew best, her methods of trying to mold them to the futures she had imagined for them did more harm than good.
Eventually, she acknowledges that her control issues are killing the race as surely as the Lessening Society and has to let them fly the nest.
Physical Description[]
She always appears as a figure on black robes, floating above the ground rather than walking. Underneath the hooded robe, she appears to emit pure light. Her voice is described as "clear." Looking upon her transparent face[8] once, Butch described her as a beautiful angel. She told him that she is not an angel, "I am myself," and as for her beauty, "I know."[7] Currently, her essence lives in Boo.[9]
